  2. Planning Activities around a Big Book
    1. Retelling and sequencing

Children retell the story and they have to be clear in the story structure. Every Story has a beginning, middle-problem and an ending-resolution of the story. When they are retelling the story they can use words such as first, next, then, after, finally.
One of the activities they can use is the “story wheel” where a circle is divided into sections, children identify the main events and these are illustrated in a section of the circle. Later, they retell the story using the "story wheel".

  10. Why this Guide?
Big books can be used from different ways Priscilla Lynch describes a pattern of organization teachers can use. In order to make children confident in their reading, it first sharpens on sharing the book with the whole class; they can emphasize on languages use and it also includes teachings goals depending o the needs of children, then they move beyond a more complicated language and work in both independent and shared reading. As a results, we can observe a pattern during this process where children observe, then imitate, after that they engage into the activity, finally they make independent reading.
Besides, as it is centered on children interest, there are many suggestions of how to use a big book; exploring the book over several sessions depending of children ´s familiarity with books, sharing the book at any time of the class and arising specific language that children need to know, it cannot be necessarily used directly; they can do independent practice as well and we can relate common human experiences that the book reflects.

  18. It is very important to make pauses while we reading to children in order to help them to understand and enjoy the story. Another thing that we can help a lot is making a funny noises and funny and weird faces. We have to allow the children to express themselves. We have to use the voice and expressions to call the attention for children with no fear to make the ridiculous.

It is an excellent mechanism to teach children and they get a good learning. A guided play is a strategy or activity that provide children an opportunity to improve their vocabulary.
The guided play by the teacher allows to explore the behavior of all children. Watch what is their reaction during the activity, and how they get involved in the play center. The teacher at the same time help students with some ideas so that the play center becomes a dynamic place and they obtain the knowledge. During the play, children play according with the topic and they are developing their literacy skills. After that the teacher include images according with the topic using new words and delivering each word with its proper sound.

One of the most important learning skill is reading because strong reading skill form the basis for learning in all subjects, it is important to identify these who struggle with reading as early as possible.
Theyaare prepared to learn to read and write. Children who have not had many experiences listening to books read aloud or talking about books, typically start school with poor early literacy skills.

  33. Text Innovations
Text innovations can be used as a follow up to the reading of the big book. These innovations consist on giving students the chance to change certain part of the story using their imagination. For example, if the story says that "The princess was using a beautiful pink dress" students may be given the chance to change this part and design the outfit they prefer the princess to use. To make them use their creativity even more, students should make their own drawings of the part of the story they changed. These changes made to the story can be added when reading the story again in class; therefore, students will feel they play an important part in the making of the material they are reading.

    Interactive Storybook Reading
The reading aloud activity is a very powerful tool for obtaining new vocabulary, phonological awareness and to create a foundation for reading comprehension. The reading aloud offer children the opportunity to actively participate and respond.
This activity requires that the teacher uses three scaffolding or support:
    a) Before-reading activities, normally used to awaken children’s interest and curiosity in the book about to be read.
    b) During-reading, this would include making questions to the students to keep children committed with the text being read.
    c) After-reading questions and activities, giving children the opportunity to discuss and respond to the story that they just read.

  39. The Essentials of Early Literacy Instruction.
Although preliminary, the knowledge base outlines children’s developmental patterns in critical areas, such as phonological and print awareness. It serves as a resource for designing early literacy programs and specific instructional practices. In addition, it offers reliable and valid observational data for grounding approaches to early reading assessment. Then we must take practical action so that our growing understanding in early literacy supports the young child as a wholesome, developing person. It is necessary to understand what young children need to know and be able to do if they are to enjoy the fruits of literacy, including valuable dispositions that strengthen their literacy interactions. Then, early literacy instruction is certainly not a bramble-bush for our very young children, but rather a welcoming environment in which to learn to read and write.
